How to Make a Plastic
ID Card

Back in the olden days, identification cards (otherwise known as ID cards) used to just be a piece of paper and a photograph laminated. The old ID cards were used for the exact same purpose as they are today – to identify the person who was carrying it. However, today ID cards are much different.

There are many different reasons why someone would have an ID card. For example, hospital employees all need to have ID on them to prove that they are certified physicians and allowed to work in the hospital. In the home care industry, ID cards will give patients who receive home visits the same feeling of reassurance that they get when they are greeted with a doctor with an ID card in a hospital.

On the opposite end of spectrums, ID cards are also used for things such as membership, drivers licenses and library cards. The ID cards of today are made out of plastic and are far more durable than the traditional paper ID cards which were from a while ago. Not only do they rarely break, but they are way more durable against things such as water and coffee. Furthermore, plastic ID cards look better and are more sophisticated and offer many more security features to ensure that they do not end up in the wrong hangs. For example, the magnetic stripe on a plastic ID card can be used to access restricted areas.

Now that we know a lot more about modern ID cards, let us talk a little bit about how they are made!

Firstly, you must gather all of the data you need to print on the ID card. For companies and businesses, things such as name, clearance level and position will likely be put on the ID card. You must of course ensure that things are spelt properly and that the correct information is on the card – this will save you time and money later in the event that there was a mistake! Don’t forget that you will also need a scanned copy of a picture of the person. Make sure the picture is front facing and that the person is staring straight so ensure that you get the most accurate identification.

Secondly, you need to design the ID card. This of course will depend on the company or the person who will be using the ID card. Most businesses or companies usually have a style and a logo in mind. Creating a design from scratch is sometimes difficult, but ID production software can help with this.

After you have designed the ID card, you must then print it. Once you are fully satisfied with the style and the design, you have to save them on your computer. It is important to make sure that you have a backup copy just in case something unthinkable could happen. Once you have done this, you can start printing the ID cards! Whether you print them individually or in bulk is up to you.

Finally, one of the most important steps is to protect your ID card. Plastic ID cards are pre-coated before they are placed in the ID card printer so there is no need to laminate them to provide extra protection. If extra durability is needed, you can get plastic cardholders. This offers some protection against wear and tear. You can even attach the card to a lanyard or a yo-yo.
